3 tips for setting goals you’ll actually stick to
Setting a goal is easy. Sticking to it? That can be a different story.
Whether you want to exercise more, get stronger, lose weight or simply live a little healthier, having a clear goal helps you know what you’re working towards. But you really don’t have to change your entire life overnight.
With these 3 tips, you can turn a good intention into a goal you can actually work towards.
1. Make your goal SMART
“I want to live healthier” sounds good, but what does that actually mean? The clearer your goal is, the easier it becomes to take action.
That’s where SMART comes in: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound.
Instead of saying “I want to lose weight”, try something like: “I want to lose 4 kg over the next four months while following a varied and balanced diet.”
Now you know exactly what you’re working towards and you can keep track of your progress along the way. Goal achieved? Nice. Time for the next step.
2. Choose consistency over perfection
Changing everything at once might sound ambitious, but it usually makes things harder to stick to. You don’t need to eat perfectly every day, work out seven days a week or say goodbye to all your favourite snacks.
Small changes you can stick with for months will get you further than an extreme plan you give up after two weeks.
So don’t treat it like a sprint to the finish line. Build habits step by step that actually fit into your daily life. Missed a workout or ate differently than planned? No big deal. Tomorrow is another day.
3. Do it for yourself
Social media is full of challenges, transformations and other people’s routines. Inspiring? Sure. But their goal doesn’t have to be yours.
Think about what you want to achieve and, more importantly, why. Maybe you want to get stronger, have more energy, lose weight or simply get into a routine that feels good. When your goal really fits you, it becomes much easier to keep working towards it.
And if things don’t go to plan? Use it as a chance to see what happened. Was your goal too big? Did your plan not fit your daily life? Is there something you could do differently next time?
Taking a step back doesn’t mean you’re back at the beginning.
So make your goal clear, give yourself time and keep moving at your own pace. Step by step, you’ll get there.
